Keep talking about sexual health

#KeepTalking

Sex is an important part of life. There are many reasons why it’s important to keep an eye on your sexual health and talk to your doctor if something doesn’t feel right. We know that many people find sexual health difficult or embarrassing to talk about. But it’s something that affects all men physically, psychologically and socially and a chat with your doctor now could prevent health issues in the future.

How to keep talking about your sexual health

Talk about ED

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability to get an erection or to maintain it long enough for satisfying sexual activity. Many things can cause ED, including:

  • Stress or depression
  • relationship issues
  • low testosterone
  • damage from urological surgery
  • cholesterol-clogged arteries

In fact, it’s often an early warning sign for heart disease! ED can be treated so make sure to mention it to your doctor when you can.

Talk about STIs and safe sex

A conversation about safe sex practices should go hand in hand with discussing STIs (sexually transmitted infections). Some can have very few visible symptoms – you’d never know if you or your partner had one without getting tested first. STIs can have serious health consequences, like developing diseases such as cancer and AIDS. Examples of STIs include:

  • HIV
  • chlamydia
  • gonorrhea
  • syphilis
  • herpes (HSV)
  • human papillomavirus (HPV)
  • hepatitis A, B, and C

Your doctor will be able to give advice on testing and treatment and all it takes is a conversation – don’t put it off.

Talk about your emotional health

Sure, sex it’s a bodily function designed to continue the species but it’s also an activity that can help cement the bonds between people. Mental health and emotional factors also play important roles in your sexual health. A conversation with your doctor may help you to:

  • Address relationship issues
  • Actively improve your mental health
  • Recognise destructive coping mechanisms like substance abuse
