Annika’s story of overcoming financial struggle

Find out how we supported Annika when she was having financial problems due to COVID-19 restrictions.

I’m a PhD candidate at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. When the Covid-19 lockdown was announced here, I knew my finances would suffer because my income is mostly made up from tutorials and labs session for undergrad students.

I found it hard to concentrate on my research because of the emotional challenges of the pandemic, as well as having to meet family and financial obligations.

And with the closure of the University due to the lockdown, it was obvious to me how vulnerable I was. Being a member of IET, I was aware of Foothold from the e-mails sent to members, so I got in touch. The Foothold team attended to me with the utmost professionalism. I felt so much empathy and understanding from the team in our interactions!

Getting financial support

Foothold helped me meet my living expenses and I’m so grateful for that. With the support of Foothold, I can meet the needs of my family and my kids can smile again. Honestly, I was really stressed before now. And it was difficult to approach individuals or organisations for help during this trying time. I know we all have different challenges to deal with.

But Foothold stepped in, and now I can look forward to the future with hope.

With the support of Foothold, I can continue with my research without financial stress. I can confidently say the financial support came at the right time.
