The weight of responsibility: supporting the next generation of engineers
The problems that draw someone towards engineering may be the same ones that keep them awake at night, creating a weight of responsibility amongst young engineers.
This #StressAwarenessWeek, we were invited to speak to Engineers Without Borders about the pressures facing young engineers and engineering students.
We explored the relationship between purpose and pressure, and what it means to enter a profession expected to help address the very challenges shaping concerns about the future.
For students and early career engineers, wanting to make a difference sits alongside finding work, paying rent and proving themselves. Being encouraged to take responsibility can feel particularly challenging when there’s limited room to influence decision making.
In the piece, we explore how we can better support the next generation – through things like mentoring, peer networks and workplaces where concerns are heard and acted on.
