Engineering Neurodiverse Futures student/apprentice support

If you are studying your first engineering course or an engineering apprenticeship, and believe you may be neurodivergent, we can offer tailored support to help you reach your full potential and enter the workforce with confidence.


At Foothold, we know that being a student or apprentice can be a very stressful time which can take its toll on you emotionally, financially and practically.

But do you ever find yourself struggling with activities that others seem to find easy? Perhaps you often find it hard to keep up with your workload. Or maybe you're having difficulty with day-to-day tasks, such as organising yourself, or managing your time?

When you encounter difficulties like this, it can be even harder to deal with the challenges that come with your studies or training, make it through to the end of your course, and achieve your career goals.

However, it could also be a sign that you may be neurodivergent.

Unfortunately, there are many neurodivergent people studying for an apprenticeship or at university who never make it into the workforce due to a lack of support and opportunities. It is also often difficult for people who believe they are neurodiverse to access a diagnosis due to stigma, cost and extensive waiting lists, which further restricts the support available to them.

That’s why, with funding from Neptune Energy, we’re offering a new programme of direct support for students and apprentices – to enable you to get a diagnosis, access the financial, emotional and practical support you need, fulfil your potential and build a successful career as an engineer.

The programme

This new programme of support is open to engineering students or apprentices who are studying their first course and believe they are neurodiverse and would like to explore getting a formal diagnosis.

You must be eligible in order to apply for the programme. You should:

  • Be aged between 16-25
  • Be on your first engineering course
  • Agree to the programme terms and conditions.

If you already have a formal diagnosis you will not be eligible to apply for this programme, but you may qualify for our other support.
